External repression and inner homophobia have being going along and are - hopefully - along retreating. When I was still repressing myself as a gay person, Harvey Milk was elected as a local council member in San Francisco, in 1977. Thirty years later, when in Europe we have many queer public figures, a new generation of pioneers are coming out in Africa and Iran, Arabia and India, China and Vietnam.
